MATERIALS SCIENCE AREA

General Objectives


I.- Development of new and strategic materials characterizing them according to their structure and properties by conforming them in useful ways.

II.- Design and manufacture of attachments and specimens for mechanical testing and transformation processes into engineering application materials.

III.- Study of super plastic flow in spatially extended crystalline systems.

IV.- Development and characterization of hardened layers in metal alloys.

V.- Know the technology used by our predecessors, as this is the bridge between skills, technical knowledge, work organization, use, ritual needs and meaning.

VI.- Obtain and characterize oxide films as protective barriers to hydrogen diffusion in metals.

VII.- Promote participation and academic discussion both internally and externally, in the topics of study, with main emphasis on the linkage that must exist between teaching and research.

Specific Objectives


· Determine the appropriate conditions for the manufacture of new materials and characterizing them to define the influence each element has on the alloy.

· Design and manufacture of tooling for the production of flat metal specimens, as well as, dice to form ceramic pads, for extrusion and electrochemical cells for corrosion cracking tests.

· Machining of metal and non-metallic specimens for stress tests, for corrosion cracking study – stress and for propagation of fatigue cracks.

· Understand the phenomenology and mechanics of microstructural flow in spatially extended monocrystalline and polycrystalline systems during thermo-mechanical requests associated with superplastic flow, plastic flow, thermofluence and precipitation hardening.

· Develop surfaces hardened by different thermochemical and mechanic-chemical procedures, obtaining multicomponial layers with hardness gradients.

· Measurement and characterization of surfaces developed using techniques such as "afm" and rough-symmetry.
Development of mathematical models for predicting the depth of layers.

· Characterize hardened surfaces with respect to the susceptibility they present to chemical wear in different media.

· Study the different materials such as: Metal artifacts, textiles attached to some artifacts, shell material, minerals and Maya blue.

· Evaluate the frailty by the presence of hydrogen, systematize hydrogen load and characterization tests in metals and alloys.

· Evaluate the deposit by Ultrasonic Pyrolytic Spray of metal oxides and systematize the characterization of oxide films obtained on metals and alloys.

· Evaluate oxide films as barriers to hydrogen diffusion.

· Disseminate research results both nationally and internationally.

· Encourage interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary participation with different research groups within the University as with groups of other national and foreign institutions.

 


Organizational Structure

Associative Research Program (PIA)


The Area has a head whose functions are specified in the Organic Regulations of the Metropolitan Autonomous University, while the rights and duties of the members of it are those established in our Organic Law.

Research projects are managed by the project manager and resource allocation is done in accordance with the policies established by the Materials Department.

Most of the area's academic staff participate in study committees, academic commissions and even coordinations attached to the Division of Basic Sciences and Engineering.

Objective: Conformation and characterization of thermo-mechanical behavior in new and advanced materials associated with the nature of microstructural evolution.

Metallurgical Process Physicochemistry
Objective: Study of the physicochemical aspects in the production of metals and alloys.

Development and Characterization of Hardened Layers in Metal Alloys
Objective: Development of wear-resistant surface layers in metals.


Study of Pre-Hispanic Metallurgy
Objective: Know the technology used by our predecessors to know the bridge between skills, theoretical knowledge, work organization, use ritual needs and meaning.
